These chattu/dayan dowels are round wooden pieces that are pushed under the leather straps that keep the tabla head in place. The dowels increase the tension in the leather straps and thus the pressure on the tabla head, resulting in better sound. They are extremely useful, especially in older tablas in which the leather straps cannot be tightened anymore on their own.
