String instruments such as the sitar and tanpura use these plastic beads to aid in the fine tuning of the instrument. A fine hole through the middle of the bead allows for the string to pass. The beads use the friction of the instrument’s wood and the pressure from the string to stay in place and can be moved in either direction to achieve the desired tone.
