The sharp and shrill sound of this aerophonic instrument is historically associated with good luck, and so it synonymous to many with Indian wedding processions as well as classical ensembles. Itβs distinct sound is due to its two sets of double reeds, making it a quadruple reed woodwind; one of three world instruments of its kind. Our shehnai is constructed from quality rosewood with a brass horn, employs 7 playable air holes, and measures 16 inches in length.
Playing the shehnai requires good control over your breathing and a proper air velocity into the reed. Before playing the shehnai it is important to make sure that the reed is wet. This can be done by wrapping it in a wet cloth for 5-10 minutes and periodically blowing into the reed until the desired sound is achieved. Bring good luck and prosperity to your family and friends with a quality shehnai!
